DR. GULED SALAH is a prominent Somali politician and academic. Born in Mogadishu, Barre’s journey from local roots exemplifies the potential for impactful leadership in Somalia’s evolving federal system. Dr. Guled pursued his higher education with dedication, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Statistics from Omdurman University in Sudan, followed by an MBA in International Business from Amity University in India. Capping his academic achievements, Barre received a Ph.D. from the United Nations University for Peace, with a focus on Federalism in Somalia – a subject that would shape his future career. In the political arena, Barre has held significant positions. He served as the Puntland’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change from 2014 to 2015, addressing crucial environmental issues in the region. His commitment to democratic processes was demonstrated through his role as Chairman of the Transitional Puntland Electoral Committee from 2019 to 2022, where he successfully oversaw the region’s first direct elections in 50 years. As the founder and inaugural director of SIDRA, a prominent research and policy analysis institute, he has played a pivotal role in shaping policy development and analysis in Somalia. His work with international organisations like UNDP demonstrates his global perspective and commitment to development.
